Surgical Division

The Surgical Division of the 37 Military Hospital is one of the most active and visible areas of the Hospital. The Division has seen tremendous growth over the years, metamorphosizing from a very small surgical unit, which served as the cornerstone for the establishment of the Military Hospital, to its present multi-specialty state.
The Division comprises of various departments or units, including General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Urology, Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Speech Therapy Department and Trauma and Surgical Emergency Department. Other inclusions of the Surgical Division are: Surgical Outpatient Department complex, Operating theatre complex, Physiotherapy department, and the Central Sterilization and Supply Department.
The Trauma and Surgical Emergency Department and the Operating Theatre provide 24-hour service. Specialist Outpatient clinic attendance is by appointment.
The Division provides highly specialised surgical care for all Ghanaians and other West African nationals. It also remains a preferred surgical facility for Diplomats, expatriates and other non-African citizens. Alongside these roles, it continues to effectively perform its core function of providing surgical care for all Ghanaian Military Personnel and their families, and for other staff of the MOD of Ghana.
As of January 2026, twenty-four (24) Surgeons of Consultants and Senior Specialist grades work in the Surgical Division.
The Surgical Division is actively involved in Surgical Residency Training, under the auspices of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and the West Africa College of Surgeons. It has churned out a number of Surgical specialists over the years, As of January 2026, the Division had fifty-six (56) surgeons-in-training (Residents) in various specialty areas.
